London, May 2025 │ Juan Dávila y Verdin, CEO of the International Green Trade and Commerce Association and distinguished alumnus of Birkbeck, University of London, delivered an uplifting speech at the university’s summer graduation ceremony on 29 April 2025. His words resonated deeply with the graduating class as he reflected on his academic journey and the transformative power of education.

Dávila y Verdin, who earned his BA in Global Politics and International Relations at Birkbeck, spoke candidly about the challenges of balancing full-time work, family responsibilities, and academic commitments. He credited the university with providing a unique platform to integrate education into daily life and expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the faculty, especially Dr Dale Mineshima-Lowe, for their invaluable guidance and support.

Among his many academic achievements, he highlighted his dissertation on national identities in European microstates, later published and presented to HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. He emphasised how education not only imparts knowledge but also fosters resilience and personal growth.

Now serving as CEO of this chamber of commerce and as Founder and General Director of The FuturED Institute, Dávila y Verdin underscored the importance of leadership, sustainability, and global collaboration. His speech encouraged graduates to embrace challenges, seize opportunities, and approach the future with curiosity and determination.

Celebrating Birkbeck’s rich history and dedication to accessible education, he held volumes documenting the university’s past two centuries, reminding graduates that they are the authors of its next chapter. His message of hope and ambition left a lasting impression, inspiring the Class of 2025 as they step into the next phase of their journeys.
