What comes to mind when we talk about nuclear energy? For many people, it is still the image of a large power station generating electricity for the grid, but the nuclear landscape is changing.

That changing landscape has significant implications not only for the energy system, but for industry, investment, engineering capability and supply chains. It is one of the reasons the International Green Trade & Commerce Association (IGTCA) is committed to ensuring nuclear has a strong voice at the Technologies for Sustainability – International Roundtable in Aberdeen on the 21st October. We are very pleased that Paul Hennessey, Growth & Strategy Director for Amentum’s Technology Division, has agreed to join us.

Paul leads international growth across advanced nuclear, clean energy, defence and technology-led innovation. With nearly two decades of experience in engineering services and technology commercialisation, much of his work sits at the difficult point between technological possibility and commercial reality. His focus is on translating emerging technologies into investable, deployable solutions for government and industry.

A technology can be technically impressive without being investable. It can attract investment without having a credible route to deployment. And it can solve a theoretical problem without answering the practical questions around infrastructure, regulation, customers, supply chains and delivery.

Paul works across precisely those boundaries, with a focus spanning advanced nuclear reactors, microreactors, fusion, defence energy resilience and international nuclear collaboration.

He also holds leadership roles across the wider industry through the Northern Nuclear Alliance, the Nuclear Industry Association’s Advanced Reactors Working Group, and as Co-Chair of the Hydrogen Energy Association’s Nuclear Working Group.

The future of nuclear is also an industrial capability conversation. The North East of Scotland has spent decades developing engineering, project delivery, manufacturing, fabrication, subsea, commercial and supply-chain expertise around some of the world’s most demanding energy infrastructure. As technologies and markets change, an important question for the region is where that capability can go next.

New nuclear presents an interesting possibility because the capabilities developed here are potentially relevant far beyond the industries in which they originated. And that raises much bigger questions for the Roundtable: What happens when we stop looking at energy sectors in isolation? Could expertise developed for offshore energy support advanced nuclear deployment? Where do nuclear, hydrogen and industrial decarbonisation intersect? What might microreactors and other advanced technologies mean for energy resilience? What capabilities will developers need from future supply chains? How do we turn emerging technologies into investable propositions and, ultimately, real projects?

Those are exactly the boundaries the Technologies for Sustainability International Roundtable was created to explore — and the mission IGTCA is committed to advancing. Paul will bring the nuclear perspective into a room that already includes leaders working across offshore energy, CCS, engineering, technology, innovation, supply chains, sustainability and entrepreneurship, united by a commitment to sustainable trade, responsible growth and international cooperation.

We are looking forward to seeing what happens when those perspectives meet.
