Policymakers, industry leaders and energy experts gathered in Edinburgh to examine the role nuclear power could play in delivering a transition that is not only low-carbon, but economically sustainable and resilient.

Hosted by the Nuclear Industry Association in partnership with Castletown Law, Scottish Energy Forum and E-FWD by Energy Voice, the event brought together representatives from across the energy sector, alongside Scottish councillors, MSPs and MPs.

Discussions highlighted a divergence between the UK and Scottish Governments regarding the role of nuclear within the future energy mix. A central theme emerged: a successful transition must balance decarbonisation with system reliability, investment confidence and industrial competitiveness. Nuclear energy was positioned as a complement to renewables, providing the stable baseload required to support electrification and energy-intensive industries.

The event also explored emerging technologies such as small modular reactors (SMRs) and floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs), alongside the long-term economic contribution nuclear projects can bring to local communities. Participants also reflected on the risks of an energy strategy that does not fully address system reliability at scale.

The International Green Trade and Commerce Association (IGTCA) took part in the discussions, reflecting its continued engagement in international dialogue on cross-sector collaboration in support of a just transition.

The day concluded with the Nuclear Institute Scotland networking dinner, sponsored by MBY Consultants Ltd, a benefactor member of IGTCA, where discussions turned from policy to delivery. During the pre-dinner speeches, MBY Consultants Ltd highlighted a clear opportunity: the nuclear sector can accelerate delivery by harnessing the engineering, fabrication, project and commercial expertise developed over decades in the North-East of Scotland’s oil and gas industry.

The discussion ultimately pointed to a broader consideration: how Scotland positions itself within that future.
